Coles Elementary School opened in 1968. The school was named for the Cole family, who were prominent local landowners, farmers, and business operators in the mid-county region. When Virginia transitioned from townships to magisterial districts in 1875, the surrounding area was officially designated as the Coles Magisterial District to honor the family's presence in the Independent Hill and Manassas communities. The school took its name directly from this historic district and community legacy
