A Message from Our School Division
Although PWCS is unable to provide instruction or class assignments to students while schools remain closed, our School Division hopes that the suggestions for optional learning activities posted here will help parents support student learning until schools re-open. Please remember that use of these materials and participation in these activities are optional and neither grades nor course credit will be awarded.

Update March 27, 2020

Dear Parents,
On Monday we will begin our online learning adventure together.  I have been spending a great deal of time this week preparing learning materials, reviewing websites and putting a schedule together for you and your children to follow next week.  Here are some things to know:

1. It is suggested that students should be spending about 3 hours per day on learning activities.  That works out to about 45 minutes per content area. The content areas we will work on this week are: Reading, Writing, Math and Science.  Next week will be reading, writing math and social studies.  We will switch back and forth between science and social studies each week.  We will work on reviewing one objective per week for each content area.  I will post all documents for the week in a folder in my Files and Documents section.  My schedule is very general - I don't suggest specific times to work on specific things, for example.  The schedule just organizes the learning activities by day for you.
2. Zoom sessions - I have set up two sessions per week - 10am on Mondays and Fridays.  On Monday I will review each of the daily activities to be sure that everyone understands what to do.  Students have the rest of the week to work on activities and we will have a Zoom session on Friday to see how it all went.
3. I may add things like a YouTube channel for the class, new websites as I find them, etc., but I will not add them to the current week's activities - I'll wait til the following week.
4. Again, PWCS has emphasized that no activities will be required and no activities will be graded - this gives kids, I believe, an excellent opportunity to try something new without being concerned about their grades.  Please see this as an opportunity to encourage creative thinking skills (think outside the box!) as you work through each day's activities.  I've already seen some examples of students going above and beyond with their learning.  Let's keep that going!!

Have a great weekend and stay healthy everyone!!Mrs. Menzies
Update March 23, 2020

Dear Parents,
I hope by now you have received and read Friday's email from PWCS which discusses instructional practices going forward.  Here are some changes to how things will work:

1. All teachers are required to share information, lessons and activities through their PWCS webpage.  Last week I posted an Update Message and uploaded a couple activities into the Files and Documents section.  Please check them out - I will be adding more files daily.

2. PWCS has created a Home Learning page on its website.  Check it out - there are lots of great resources and activities!  I have skimmed through it already and this week I will go a little deeper and provide you with my reviews of what I think are the best resources

3. I will be communicating through my webpage, email and Class Dojo app in an attempt to reach all students.  I have been communicating with parents and students through the Class Dojo app, which is super convenient as it runs off your phone.  Even so, I am only reaching about half the class.  Please let me know how you are accessing my messages so that I know what works best for you - see contact information below.

4. I will be exploring a few new strategies that would allow online activities to be more interactive - I will share info about that later in the week.

5. Contacting me - the best, fastest, and easiest way to contact me is through the Class Dojo app - please contact me via email if you need log-in information.  I will be available to answer questions either through Dojo or email from 8am - 5pm (normal school hours for me).  You can message/email me at other times, I just may not be as quick to answer.  My email is menzieer@pwcs.edu.

I hope that this information is helpful.  Please contact me if you have any questions at all.
Happy learning and stay healthy everyone!

Mrs. Menzies

Update March 19, 2020

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone is doing well, staying healthy and enjoying this unexpected time together with your family.  I want to give you a few suggestions for keeping the learning going while everyone is at home:

1. Please have your children continue to practice reading and math on Study Island daily.
2. Please have your children read and write every day.  They can simply write a sentence or two about their reading.  This is a great way to promote reading comprehension, especially if it leads to a discussion of their reading!
3. I have been posting daily on Class Dojo.  I post a question of the day, something simple and fun, but learning related.  Please have your child respond - I always respond back!
4. There is a useful links page on the Coles website that has some good SOL practice websites - check it out!  Also check out the useful links section of my web page - I will try to post websites with good activities as I come across them

Keep an eye on this page for more learning activities, assignments and ideas in the coming days.

Stay healthy everyone!
