Hello! My name is Mrs. Purdy. I am new to Coles ES and to teaching. I am a career switcher, which means I had a previous career. I practiced law. Specifically, I represented children in court in both PWC and Arlington County. My career as a practicing attorney was long and productive, but after retirement I felt I had more to offer. Since I started out my college career at Virginia Commonwealth University in Visual Arts, I decided to go back to my artistic roots.
So, here I am. And, I'm glad to be here!
What Are We Doing in Art Class?
3rd - 5th are working with clay to create double pinch pots. They are learning how to score and slip to attach their pots together. They are also embellishing the outside of their pots by adding texture as well as attaching geometric and/or organic shapes. Ask your student what will happen to their double pinch pot when it's firing in the kiln if they have left an air bubble in it! Also, ask them what to do to rid of the air bubble.
Second grade is "painting" with and gluing tissue paper shapes
to create a Winter landscape.
First grade is drawing geometric and/or organic shapes and lines with black crayon, then, "painting" with tissue paper to create a Miro-Style work of art.
Kindergarten is learning about geometric shapes. They are"painting" with
tissue paper squares, rectangles, and triangles.
